Food Freedom

iframe>

I was going to go a different route this week, but yesterday’s article left me thirsting for me (by the way I am in rapture with this video). I so frequently see posts and articles on my feed about raw milk and food rights, yesterday’s post completely pulled me into the world of food freedom. It seems so crazy in a country where we claim, ‘Land of the Free,’ but here are all these articles about restrictions on our Food Rights. After hundreds of years and our rights to nutritious foods is being sacrificed. Of course money and greed has gotten largely in the way, so that there is plainly just a bunch of confusion going on. What’s safe, what isn’t? There are so many contradicting articles and studies, we don’t know what to believe? Processed foods are cheap, eating healthy is expensive (lame). Maybe it’s because of the sites that I subscribe too, but I see a growing number of raw milk pieces. We have covered raw milk before and did a piece on raw milk vending machines in France. Many Paleo, especially extremist say no dairy. This is to neither promote that you consume dairy or Continue reading

Herd Sharing

Discovered this article and I do like awareness pieces. I’ve voiced my opinion before on the stupidity of Indiana laws, my rebellious side that doesn’t like restriction is enticed by this article. Way to go farmers, I love the idea! As for the risks, of course you wanted a trusted farm, something that you’ve seen, but there are risks everywhere and it is better than the toxins that we gobble down. Do your research, check out some of our other posts on raw dairy.

Herd sharing’s natural benefits raise risk worries

DECATUR, Ind. (AP) — In a barn at his farm outside Decatur, Mark Grieshop opens a refrigerator door, pulls out a plastic half-gallon jug of milk and pours himself a tall glass.

He believes it’s some of the best milk money can’t buy.

That’s because in Indiana, it’s illegal to sell for human consumption the kind of milk Grieshop’s farm produces – unpasteurized milk, also known as raw milk.

But Grieshop is one of a growing number of Indiana farmers who, if they can’t sell the milk, are willing to sell the cow instead.

Grieshop’s Pasture’s Delights farm sells shares of its pasture-fed 20-head Ayrshire dairy herd to people who want access to the cows’ unpasteurized product. The 35-year-old farmer says the practice is the equivalent of buying a cow, or part of a cow – and paying him to house, feed, care for and milk it.

Because the animal belongs not to him but to its shareholders, Grieshop says, “they’re free to use their milk however they want.” It’s only illegal if they sell or distribute it to someone Continue reading

Featured Food: Celery

Still pushing through the foods that I thought I would have covered, but apparently haven’t. Today celery is up to bat. I like celery, especially to add another texture when I’m looking for something crisp and refreshing. One of the few vegetables I really enjoy raw.

  • Very good source of vitamin C= immune system/inflammation
  • phthalides (active compounds) can help relax the muscles around arteries, allowing them to dilate and helping, therefore with blood pressure
  • phthalides are decrease stress hormones
  • courmarins prevent free radical damage
  • good source of magnesium Continue reading

Sleep to Prevent Weight Gain

sleepingWe talked about stress this week, and sleep goes hand-in-hand with this and is another one of those things were you can’t eat right all you want but if you’re not sleeping you’re not healthy. One-third of the population suffers from insomnia. What does this mean?

  • elevated cortisol levels
  • which means you’re more likely to develop diabetes
  • fatter
  • cutting back 5 hours of sleep for a week has been shown to decrease insulin sensitivity
  • sleep restriction impairs carbohydrate tolerance Continue reading

Cut Workout Times

80s aerobicsI love the 80′s (I don’t even hate on this outfit, I actually love it), but not all good things came from this decade. As the low-fat trend came from the 70′s, the exercise trend came from 80′s. Although the gear was cool, the persistent exercise not so much. We’ve been told to exercise at least 30 minutes a day and people will spend hours jogging. I think I’m going to pick up running to lose weight-is something I frequently hear. Oy! If we eat like our ancestors, why not workout like them too? To begin ‘working out’ was just life back then. Believe it or not they weren’t running around all the time. They would have been more likely walking along (slow-aerobic exercise that makes up the bottom of the exercise pyramid 55-75% of heart rate max=comfortable so talking is still comfortable). If you run for an hour, how much do you have in the tank to run away from a dangerous lion? I ran cross country in high school (and hated every minute of it I might add, loved the team part but despised the running part). When I had to transition into softball, I was slow. I was so used to using my slow twitch muscle fibers, I could pump my arms ferociously but it was like running in glue or slow-motion. I would have been lunch for sure. Other bad things about chronic cardio is the wear and tear it places on your joints. Alright so now we’re slow and beat up, but aren’t we getting the best work out. Problems with working out too much:

Don’t Sweat It! Tips to Decrease Stress

 Simplify

You know that one of my favorite quotes said by one of my favorite men is? ‘Simplify, simplify, simplify,’ Henry David Thoreau. Sounds pretty easy right, just like one of my other favorites, ‘Life is Fun’ (thanks to that genius bear Winnie the Pooh). If they were really that easy then we’d all this way wouldn’t we. No we have piles of stuff and mile long lists of things that ‘have’ to be done each day. Trust me on this one, I have spent the last year of my life simplifying and uncluttering (yes this is my notorious shed that I reside). I loved stuff, I loved clothes and fashion and so on, but the last year I’ve been making an effort to get rid of the clothes and unnecessary things that I don’t use, if it serves no purpose I’ve ditched it. It’s like Dr. Dyer says, with every item I give away its like clipping a string, so I have 3/4 of the strings that I used to. Do you know how much less pressure that is? How freeing that is? I don’t have to worry about taking care of stuff and I can just enjoy life, my backpack is there, there is no I ‘have’ to mentality and I can just go. I don’t have to worry about cleaning up, because that’s one thing about stuff you have to spend so much time taking care of it. What is the purpose of a living room that no one is allowed to sit in, but just for looks (this has always baffled me)? Of course I tend to be a bit of an Continue reading

Relax: How stress may be preventing change

I know that I preach eating, eating, eating, but lately I’ve started to realize that I need to start emphasizing lifestyle in general. Yes eating is important, but to be healthy you have to be balanced in all areas of your life. You can eat as healthy as you want, but there are still other variables that can keep you back from the body or health that you want (which we will cover this week). You can exercise til the cows come home too, but that won’t keep the weight off and as we’ll see this week, this too be preventing your weight loss. Today is one of my other favorite subjects: STRESS.  I like this:

Real or perceived threat to homeostasis that elicits an adaptive response to help maintain internal stability and ensure survival. Continue reading

Featured Food: Eggs

Eggs, they’re one of my favorite topics and I’ve written about them several times, but after clearing cholesterol this week, it’s time to put the nail in the coffin and kill the BS that we should eat eggs. We have nearly exhausted the fact that cholesterol foods do not raise cholesterol, but we will review that first. Remember that small dense LDL is undesirable and large buoyant LDL we don’t mind? Well eggs actually shift the proportion of small to large. This is a good thing. To further back this, last year my Dad had read a report on an 88 year old that ate 24 eggs a day. The man’s blood work was good, as was his cholesterol levels and he was generally in good health. We tested these ourselves; sometimes I ate a dozen eggs a day. When I went to Yosemite I only packed 4 dozen eggs for the trip. With 30 miles of hiking in two days, I think the eggs were sufficient in doing their job (because I’m a fat-burner I could get away with this. The eggs provided fat and energy for me, whereas a sugar-burner is dependent on carbs and would not have faired so well), plus I didn’t lose any muscle tissue. People ask me my favorite choice of protein: eggs, red meat and liver. I eat eggs and red meat everyday; there is just so much nutrition to be had with these selections. I also have added interest as I’ve taken my love for being Continue reading
